Composting at Home: The Growing Trend of DIY Waste Reduction in Taiwan

Driven by a heightened awareness of food waste and sustainability, home composting is gaining momentum in Taiwan. Individuals are increasingly seeking ways to reduce their environmental impact and contribute to a greener society. Urban gardening and a desire for household self-sufficiency further fuel this trend, as people recognize the value of compost in enriching soil and growing healthy plants.

Taiwanese households employ various composting methods depending on their space and needs:

• Traditional Pile Composting: For those with backyards, traditional pile composting remains a popular choice. This involves creating a designated area for layering organic waste, allowing it to decompose naturally over time.  
• Bokashi Fermentation: In smaller spaces, Bokashi fermentation offers an efficient solution. This method utilizes beneficial microorganisms to ferment kitchen waste in an airtight container, producing a pre-compost that can be added to soil or further composted.  
• Vermicomposting: Vermicomposting, or worm composting, utilizes earthworms to break down organic waste in a contained bin, producing nutrient-rich vermicast. This method is well-suited for apartments and smaller homes.  

Despite its benefits, home composting presents challenges:

• Odors and Pests: Concerns about odors and pests can deter some from composting. Proper composting techniques, such as maintaining a balanced mix of materials and adequate aeration, are crucial to minimize these issues.  
• Space Limitations: Limited space can be a barrier for those in apartments or smaller homes. Compact composting systems, such as Bokashi bins or worm composting bins, offer solutions for smaller spaces.  
• Educating Households: Not everyone has the knowledge or experience to compost effectively. Educational resources and community support are essential to guide households and ensure successful composting.

Taiwan fosters home composting through various support systems:

• Free Workshops: Local governments and organizations offer free workshops on composting techniques, providing hands-on training and guidance to residents.  
• Compost Bin Subsidies: Some areas provide subsidies for purchasing compost bins, making home composting more accessible to households.  
• Educational Campaigns: Public awareness campaigns educate residents about the benefits of composting and provide resources on how to compost effectively.
• Community Composting: Community composting programs offer drop-off points for those who cannot compost at home, further supporting household waste reduction efforts.  

Home composting contributes significantly to Taiwan’s waste reduction goals:

• Reducing Municipal Waste: By composting at home, households divert organic waste from municipal collection, reducing the overall volume of waste sent to landfills and incinerators.  

Greener Taiwan: Home composting aligns with Taiwan’s broader sustainability goals, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and contributing to a greener and more sustainable society.
