The sustainable development of the environment requires the reduction of waste and the creation of a virtuous cycle of resources to ensure endless life and hope for humanity. In Taiwan, it is estimated that up to 30 million tons of organic waste is generated annually, coming from agriculture, businesses, and households.
These wastes can be divided into four categories: agricultural by-products, agricultural processing by-products, livestock excreta, and municipal waste (kitchen waste). However, currently registered organic waste recycling companies have a total processing capacity of only about 3 million tons per year, leaving an estimated 27 million tons of organic waste improperly reused. This waste is either incinerated or used as pig feed, with the rest becoming sources of environmental pollution. It is necessary to find sustainable and effective ways to manage organic waste to prevent negative impacts on the environment.
Integrating organic waste reuse is an urgent issue that requires government and related units to improve. Many scholars have provided suggestions in the past, but despite advanced composting technology, it is still difficult to combine different organic wastes to meet fertilizer demand. This is due to challenges such as transportation costs, space constraints, pollution control, cost revenue and expenditure, and deployment proportions. Despite promotion, subsidies, incentives, and other efforts, few success stories exist.
Composting-free technology provides a comprehensive solution for both the government and private sector in dealing with the large amounts of organic waste that currently have nowhere to go. This technology allows the waste to be returned to the natural environment and used as a source of food production.
